Yes indeed.     They were very happy years.   The work was quite demanding, but we had some good times and met many interesting people.
Here I am on my first voyage on the ship.

Fifty years ago today, I joined this ship, the RMS Transvaal Castle, at Southampton.

I had been at sea for four years, serving in two cargo liners, two colliers and two iron ore carriers.       By that time, I had come to tolerate the sea, but was not over-enthusiastic about the life.     The Transvaal Castle changed all that, and it was the start of  a glorious era in a number of passenger liners large and small that extended until late 1992 when I finally decided to leave the sea.
This is an old publicity film that I found on U Tube.

    Thanks,
The sea is plasticine (modelling clay).    It is painted with midnight blue Humbrol gloss enamel, and the white is added whilst the blue is still wet so that it runs.    My wife paints the sea!      I seldom get many comments about the models, but the response here is actually better than elsewhere!
When I take models to the local model ship society, I can almost see their eyes glaze over when it comes my turn to talk about what I have built!
I think it is because I specialize  in building harmless merchant ships rather than warships bristling with guns.    That comes from having spent many years in the Merchant Navy, so warships just do not interest me!
    Thank you for your appreciation.

    Thanks,
The sea in this one is just plasticine (modelling clay), formed by rolling a round plastic bead up and down on it.    Painted with Humbrol gloss enamels.   White added whilst blue is still wet so it runs.   Sea painting done by my wife!
Attached is my sea roller with the plastic bead on the end!

I design and build small vintage radio receivers using valves (tubes).      Makes a change from ships, and is a combination of obsolete technology and model making, as there is often a bit of polished wood about.
