Shipbuilder got a reaction from Gwyl Blaser in American barque James A Wright
Yes, Charles G. Davis made a voyage round Cape Horn in the vessel in 1892. The plans in the book are Bluejacket Ship Crafters, as you say. I had no idea there was a kit though, as I have never followed kits, preferring the obscure or semi-obscure, preferably of the merchant service. A very good subject for a first sailing ship model. Good looking, but not fancy in any way - not even got a figurehead!

Thanks,
The sea in this one is just plasticine (modelling clay), formed by rolling a round plastic bead up and down on it. Painted with Humbrol gloss enamels. White added whilst blue is still wet so it runs. Sea painting done by my wife!
Attached is my sea roller with the plastic bead on the end!

Shipbuilder got a reaction from Gwyl Blaser in What else do you model besides SIBs?
I design and build small vintage radio receivers using valves (tubes). Makes a change from ships, and is a combination of obsolete technology and model making, as there is often a bit of polished wood about.

You can get wire so fine that you can hardly see it, but I don't know how it would behave if it had to be folded down! I built this about 20 years ago, just for fun. Looks pretty awful really, but the hull is only 2 1/2 inches long, and it only took a couple of days to build! It is the Persian Empire, rigged in fine copper wire!
The black & white images are Flower of the Fal, built about 30 years ago, also rigged in wire!

Home-made Curve Cutter, using half a razor blade. I would imagine this would be just as useful fror SIBs as large models! I find it indispensable.

Although it doesn't look a lot different, quite a lot of fine detail has gone on since the last image, and it is now ready for masting and rigging.

I have now made a lot more progress, and it is now almost ready for masting & rigging. I have now worked for a total of 62.5 hours on this one, and that includes completing the display case.

I only put it here because it is "off topic," not being a SIB, but if it nees to be moved to builds, that is OK with me!
The white painting on the sides of the raised poop and forecastle is white matt primer aerosol spray, as used in automobile spraying and undercoating.
The white accommodation is not painted at all. It is made from white styrene sheet.
The red underwater colouring is red oxid matt primer aerosol spray. The black part of the hull is artists' acrylic black painted on by hand. The white stripe is just a strip of white paper glued on! The grey hatches are grey matt primer!
I use the above mentioned paints because they dry in a few minutes. I have an airbrush, but never use it because I could never get the hang of it, and cleaning it out is too much trouble! I prefer just squirting it out of an aersol can!
