  1. Test fitted to make sure the ship will fit in the bottle neck. Had to sand down one of the deck housings so the mast would fold down more. Started the rigging.
  2. Sounds interesting. Curious to see how it works!
  3. The first attempt at the cannons didn't work well. The glue didn't bond the brass wire & wood bases very good so I switched to card stock bases. Glued layers until they were thick enough. This worked better & once painted couldn't tell the difference. Added wood channels & cut slits in them for the shroud lines.
  4. They are actually card stock stacked & glued.
  5. Looks interesting! I'll be following along!
  6. I have decided to change from the wire staples to wood pieces. Removed the staples- in the process of carving out groves so the wood channels will be more securely glued on.
  7. Made the different deck fittings. Trying to make cannons using small wood squares & brass wire. Cut out the gun ports & capped the rail with string soaked in glue.
  8. Painted hull. Made wire staples for shroud lines to tie to later. Drilled some rigging holes. Made windows for Captains cabin. Painted on paper - cut them out to shape & glued them on.
  9. Ready for the masts. I thought about using wire hinges but decided to try to make it hinged with all wood to look more like a real mast coming out of thee deck when upright. It took a few tries. Got a few splits but finally got it. I cut wood splinters with a razor hobby blade for the hinge & carefully glued them on the outside edge making sure the glue didn't seep into the whole hinge. Pegged the bottom of the masts to glue solid into deck. When these are raised in the bottle a small dab of glue will be applied to the hinges to make it all more like a solid mast.
  10. Dilled rigging holes in bowsprit & got the paper bulwarks glued on.
  11. I forgot to post a few details. I am going to leave the labels on this bottle because I save different hot sauce bottles so this ship will only be able to be seen from the 2 sides with no labels. This also means the bottle will sit upright instead of laying on it's side. This will be both a saved hot sauce bottle & a ship in a bottle. I used Plastalina clay for the sea. I got it at my local Hobby Lobby store. It never hardens. After putting the clay in the bottle I heated it on the stove burner just enough to melt & bond to the glass better then shaped the wave patterns some - will work on this a little more before it is done.
  12. Didn't put much effort into the jig but it's good enough to get this ship built. Cut out & shaped a strip out of paper that will wrap around & form the bulwarks
  13. Added putty in bottle ahead of time & pressed ship into putty to for its seat.
  14. Sketching out my plans. Pre-carved hull.
  15. I love hot sauces & collect bottles of each kind I try. This one has a pirate theme & name so I thought I'd drop a ship in it.
  16. Thanks everyone! Jeff, I didn't know this was here! Jim, I live in Harnett County near Broadway/Sanford
  17. New here. Found this log & I am blown away! The detail is awesome - great job!
  18. Hi everyone. Gwyl found me on MSW & told me about this forum. I have done regular ship builds for a while but space is limited & I'm getting into some bottle building. I've got one started now. When I learn the ropes here I will start a build log as soon as I can. Look forward to seeing everyone's logs & meeting you all! Jesse
